Palma de Mallorca Airport to undergo official name change

The official name of the Son Sant Joan aerodrome is set to change from ‘Aeropuerto de Palma de Mallorca’ to ‘Aeropuerto de Palma-Mallorca’. However, the Ministry of Transport has not yet formally communicated this change to the airport manager, Aena.

The new naming convention, which replaces a preposition with a hyphen, was accepted by the government following a proposal by the Obra Cultural Balear. While the entity initially requested the Catalan name ‘Aeroport de Palma’, this was rejected to comply with International Civil Aviation Organization standards, which recommend including the island's name for island airports.

Obra Cultural Balear has indicated it will approach Aena directly to request that terminal signage incorporate the Catalan term ‘Aeroport’. Meanwhile, the airport is currently undergoing extensive remodeling works estimated at nearly 600 million euros, leading to operational challenges and passenger disruptions due to construction and security upgrades.
