Palma-Mallorca Airport name change

Overview

The Spanish Ministry of Transport and Mobility has issued a ministerial order to rename the main airport of the island from ‘Aeropuerto de Palma de Mallorca’ to ‘Aeropuerto de Palma-Mallorca’. This change, which replaces a preposition with a hyphen, aims to align the airport’s name with the official Catalan toponymy of the Balearic Islands and follow International Civil Aviation Organization recommendations to include the island’s name.

While the Obra Cultural Balear supported the adjustment, they have indicated intentions to request that terminal signage use the Catalan term ‘Aeroport’. Additionally, the Assemblea Sobiranista de Mallorca (ASM) has announced it will continue administrative-legal challenges, arguing that the Spanish term ‘Aeropuerto’ does not satisfy the demand for the Catalan ‘Aeroport’.

Parallel to the naming transition, the airport is undergoing extensive remodeling works valued at nearly 600 million euros, which has resulted in passenger disruptions and operational challenges.
