Palo Alto police investigate multiple mountain lion sightings

The Palo Alto Police Department has launched an investigation following multiple mountain lion sightings in the community. On September 24, residents reported seeing a mountain lion in Midtown near the intersection of Middlefield Road and Colorado Avenue. Police and animal control officers responded to the area but were unable to locate the animal.

A second sighting was reported on Friday near the 1600 block of Sand Hill Road, close to the Stanford University campus. This sighting occurred more than three miles from the initial reports. Authorities stated that the mountain lion has not displayed aggressive behavior.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife noted that mountain lion attacks on humans are rare, with only six known fatal attacks in the state since 1890. Police have urged residents to remain vigilant, keep pets leashed, and avoid running if they encounter a mountain lion. Residents are advised to call 911 immediately if an animal is spotted.
