Mountain lion sightings in Northern California

Overview

In early September, a mountain lion sighting in San Francisco’s Panhandle area near Golden Gate Park prompted an emergency response. After a pedestrian reported the animal climbing into a tree, authorities cordoned off streets and utilized drones and illumination to scan the canopy. Despite the search, the Department of Fish and Wildlife stated that wardens never spotted the lion, suggesting it may have fled the area.

Later in the month, the Palo Alto Police Department launched an investigation following multiple sightings in the community. Residents reported a mountain lion in Midtown near Middlefield Road and Colorado Avenue, as well as a second sighting near the 1600 block of Sand Hill Road close to Stanford University. While authorities noted the animal has not displayed aggressive behavior, police have urged residents to remain vigilant and keep pets leashed.
