Spain school year begins amid demographic shifts and teacher protests
The 2026-2027 school year begins across various Spanish regions, marked by demographic shifts and labor tensions. In Galicia, approximately 298,436 students are returning to classrooms, a decrease of over 4,600 compared to the previous year. Education officials attribute this decline to falling birth rates, though an increase in foreign-born students provides some compensation.
In the Valencian Community, the start of classes is accompanied by teacher salary increases and ongoing labor disputes. While an indefinite strike is currently suspended, major unions continue to protest over classroom ratios, infrastructure, and inclusion policies. Similarly, in the Basque Country, the new term faces challenges regarding educational segregation, teacher authority, and the implementation of free school supplies for vulnerable students.
Other regional highlights include Parets and Rubí, where local authorities are focusing on the role of art in pedagogy and the responsible use of artificial intelligence in schools. In Melilla, educators have expressed concerns regarding the lack of resources and the need for better classroom climate control. Meanwhile, cultural events such as the Heritage Nights in Cáceres and Cuenca are scheduled to coincide with the seasonal transition.
