Pamplona region reports 31 legionellosis cases

A legionellosis outbreak has been detected in the Pamplona region of Navarra, Spain, with 31 potential cases reported as of September 8. Most cases are concentrated in Burlada and Villava, with additional cases in neighborhoods such as Txantrea, Erripagaina, and Sarriguren. The affected individuals are aged between 35 and 90, with the majority being 65 years or older.

Health authorities, including the Public Health and Labor Institute of Navarra (ISPLN), initiated investigations on September 4 following confirmed cases. While water supply networks were inspected in collaboration with the Pamplona Water Community and subsequently ruled out as a source, suspicion has shifted toward local cooling towers.

As a preventive measure, authorities have ordered the closure of these cooling towers and collected samples for testing. Operations at these facilities are suspended until all safety requirements and preventive measures are met. Epidemiological surveys are ongoing to identify specific exposure points, and local hospitals and primary care centers have been alerted to intensify the detection of new cases.
