Legionellosis outbreak in Navarra, Spain

Overview

In early September 2026, health authorities in the Pamplona region of Navarra, Spain, identified a legionellosis outbreak involving 31 potential cases. The majority of those affected are aged 65 or older, with cases concentrated in Burlada, Villava, and several other local neighborhoods.

Following investigations by the Public Health and Labor Institute of Navarra (ISPLN), water supply networks were inspected and ruled out as the source of the infection. Consequently, suspicion has shifted toward local cooling towers. Authorities have ordered the closure of these towers and suspended operations at these facilities until safety requirements are met and sample testing is complete. Epidemiological surveys continue to identify specific exposure points.
