PAN and Morena leaders clash amid political tensions in Mexico

Political tensions are rising in Mexico between the PAN and Morena parties. Daniela Álvarez, the state president of PAN, has publicly challenged Cruz Pérez Cuéllar, the Morena state coordinator, following his announcement that he would pursue legal action against PAN's campaign regarding allegations of a ‘narcoparty’ and ‘narcocandidate.’ Álvarez dismissed his claims, accusing him of corruption and stating that she would also pursue legal avenues if necessary.

Álvarez further alleged that Pérez Cuéllar faces over 30 complaints for corruption, specifically citing suspicious contracts involving a gas station entrepreneur. She criticized his management of his municipality, claiming he left the city in a state of neglect.

Separately, reports indicate a shift in PAN's candidate selection strategy. Despite leader Jorge Romero's 2025 pledge to prioritize civil society candidates over career politicians for the 2027 elections, current profiles suggest a different trend. Of the nine potential gubernatorial candidates identified, eight are active politicians, including several mayors and deputies, while only one is from civil society.
