Sheinbaum Says Ernesto Ruffo Case Is Criminal, Not Political
Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum asserted that the criminal investigation of former Baja California governor Ernesto Ruffo Appel concerns organized‑crime and fuel‑smuggling offences and has no political motive. She cited evidence presented by the Federal Prosecutor’s Office (FGR), which says the dossier contains 96 pieces of proof linking Ruffo to a rail‑based contraband network and that a judge ordered his detention at the Altiplano federal prison together with eight co‑accused.
Ruffo’s defence lawyer, Fernando Gómez Mont, argued that the roughly 20,000‑page file lacks phone records, testimonies or documents directly tying Ruffo to the alleged scheme and that the prosecution has not presented substantive evidence. The PAN’s national leader Jorge Romero labelled Ruffo a political prisoner, a claim that Sheinbaum and the FGR both rejected, emphasizing that the case is a criminal matter and that other seven individuals have also been detained in the same investigation.
