PAN demands release of former Baja California governor Ernesto Ruffo

The National Action Party (PAN) has called on Mexico's judicial authorities to free former Baja California governor Ernesto Ruffo Appel, asserting that his detention on alleged hydrocarbon‑smuggling charges is politically motivated. PAN leader Jorge Romero Herrera said the case lacks evidence, describes the transfer of Ruffo to a maximum‑security prison as “disproportionate,” and argues that the government is using the justice system to pressure opposition figures.

Romero highlighted what he called double standards, noting that officials from the ruling Morena party facing similar accusations have not been investigated with the same rigor. He urged the courts to apply the law independently, neutrally and objectively, and to respect due process for Ruffo, whom the party labels a political prisoner.
