Panama earthquake response: reconstruction and agricultural risks
Following a 7.5 magnitude earthquake on October 9, centered near Tonosí, Panama has initiated large-scale recovery efforts. The Ministry of Housing and Territorial Organization (Miviot) has begun rebuilding homes, prioritizing vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. In Herrera, the first phase involves constructing 300 homes, while Veraguas has seen the start of construction in Soná and Río de Jesús.
Infrastructure damage is significant, with 619 schools, 42 health centers, 15 bridges, and 54 roads affected. The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) is currently assessing repair costs for these routes. This damage poses a critical threat to the agricultural sector; approximately 12,000 hectares of rice in the Azuero Peninsula, specifically in Tonosí, Mariato, and Arenas, are at risk due to transport difficulties. Additionally, the dairy sector reported losses, including nearly 7,000 liters of milk spoiled at a Nestlé collection center.
Health authorities are monitoring approximately 3,800 people in 54 shelters, managing 200 reported cases of gastrointestinal illness. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture is inspecting over 40 national heritage sites, including the controlled demolition of the church in Soná due to structural instability.
