Panama approves $255 million San Miguelito cable car project

Panama's Comptroller General has approved a $255 million contract for the construction of the San Miguelito cable car system. The agreement, signed between Metro de Panamá, S. A. and Doppelmayr Panamá, aims to provide a new transport alternative for residents in communities such as Samaria, Torrijos Carter, Mano de Piedra, and Valle de Urracá. The 6.6-kilometer project will feature six stations and connect to Line 2 of the Panama Metro at the Cincuentenario station, with an expected completion date by late 2028.

Additionally, Metro de Panamá is planning the Line 2A extension, which would connect San Miguelito to Paitilla via the Ricardo J. Alfaro highway (Tumba Muerto). This 10-kilometer project, also referred to as the University Route due to its proximity to five universities, is slated for study and bidding preparations in 2027. If timelines are met, the extension, which would include 12 stations using a mix of aerial and underground sections, could be operational by 2033.
