San Miguelito urban cable car project in Panama
Overview
The San Miguelito urban cable car project in Panama is moving forward following the appointment of Malespín Constructora as the civil works contractor. The Dominican firm is tasked with constructing foundations, stations, and support towers for the 6.6-kilometer system, which has been awarded to Doppelmayr.
Panama’s Comptroller General has officially approved the US$255 million contract between Metro de Panamá, S. A. and Doppelmayr Panamá. The system will include six stations—Balboa, Cincuentenario, Samaria, Mano de Piedra, Valle de Urracá, and Torrijos Carter—and is designed to integrate with Panama Metro Line 2 at the Cincuentenario station. The project is expected to be completed by late 2028.
Looking ahead, Metro de Panamá is planning a Line 2A extension, known as the University Route. This 10-kilometer project would connect San Miguelito to Paitilla via the Ricardo J. Alfaro highway. Scheduled for study and bidding in 2027, the extension could potentially be operational by 2033.
