Panama Braces for Continued Heavy Rains and Heat Through Weekend

The Panamanian Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (IMHPA) warned that an unstable atmospheric pattern, driven by the monsoon trough, low‑pressure systems and tropical wave activity, will keep heavy rains and thunderstorms affecting many regions of Panama through the weekend. The weather has already caused flooding in Panama City streets, fallen trees, landslides in Chiriquí, Chiriquí, Veraguas and other provinces, and rescue operations for people trapped on roads.

For Friday, August 7, IMHPA forecast high temperatures of 29‑34 °C with a high heat index, especially in the Pacific coastal areas, while isolated showers and brief thunderstorms are expected across the Caribbean and Pacific coasts, the Ngäbe‑Buglé comarca, and parts of Coclé, Panama Oeste and Chiriquí. Winds will vary between 20‑35 km/h depending on the region, and sea conditions will remain moderate.

Authorities have extended the rain‑prevention alert and are urging residents to stay informed and heed safety recommendations.
