Severe weather and flooding in Panama

Overview

Panama has faced persistent meteorological instability characterized by heavy rains, thunderstorms, and high temperatures. In early August, the Panamanian Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (IMHPA) reported that monsoon trough activity and low-pressure systems caused flooding in Panama City, landslides in provinces such as Chiriquí and Veraguas, and fallen trees.

By late August, the National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) issued new weather alerts as tropical wave number 42 and high humidity levels threatened the country with flash floods, electrical storms, and strong winds. Authorities identified saturated soils in regions like Veraguas as a significant risk factor for landslides, maintaining continuous monitoring of vulnerable areas including the Azuero Peninsula, Darien, Colon, and the Bocas del Toro islands.

In early September 2026, instability driven by Tropical Wave No. 43 prompted warnings for moderate to heavy rainfall, potential flooding, and landslides through September 7. By September 7, severe weather had caused widespread damage. In the province of Colón, continuous rainfall led to landslides and flooding in communities such as Villa del Caribe, El Nazareno, and La Resurrección, where ten houses experienced flooding due to an overflowing creek.

Simultaneously, the provinces of Chiriquí and the Ngäbe Buglé Comarca were hit by strong winds and rain. Preliminary assessments reported 29 incidents, including nine damaged structures, three roof collapses, and 17 obstructed roads. Fallen trees have blocked major and secondary roads in districts including Remedios, San Félix, David, Alanje, and Bugaba. Sinaproc response teams are currently working to clear debris and manage the impact of these events.
