Panama Canal reports increased transit and tonnage for fiscal year 2026
The Panama Canal Authority has reported an increase in both the number of transits and total tonnage for fiscal year 2026, covering the period from October 2025 to September 2026. This growth underscores the waterway's strategic role in global maritime trade and its ability to meet international demand despite significant environmental challenges.
Operational resilience has been a primary focus as the canal adapts to the effects of El Niño. The phenomenon has caused severe water shortages in the region, with rainfall in the canal basin dropping 34% below normal between May and August. This climate volatility led Panama to declare a national emergency, affecting multiple hydroelectric basins and potable water supplies.
Despite these hydrological stresses, the canal's management has maintained traffic fluidity, reinforcing confidence in the infrastructure as a reliable link for global supply chains.
