Panama cancels civic parades and adapts schooling after earthquake
Authorities in Panama have canceled civic parades scheduled for November 3 and 4 in the provinces of Coclé, Herrera, Los Santos, and Veraguas. The decision follows consultations with local governments, educational directors, and emergency services, including the Ministry of Health, the National Police, and the Fire Department. The measure aims to protect citizens and redirect institutional resources toward humanitarian assistance for those affected by the 7.5 magnitude earthquake that struck the Azuero region on October 9, 2026.
In Veraguas, the Ministry of Education (Meduca) is implementing a flexible return to classes this Monday. Due to damage to schools and infrastructure, teaching will utilize various modalities, including virtual classes, didactic modules, WhatsApp communication, and home visits by teachers. Some communities, such as Quebrada Grande, face significant challenges as schools require reconstruction and students have lost essential school supplies due to damage to their homes.
