Panama earthquake recovery and school reopening
Overview
Following a magnitude 7.5 earthquake on October 9, 2026, Panama has initiated a phased recovery process focusing on education and housing.
The Ministry of Education (Meduca) began a progressive reopening of schools, with 770 institutions across 12 regions scheduled to resume in-person classes on October 21. While many areas returned to normal, schools in Coclé, Herrera, Los Santos, and Veraguas remained closed for further structural inspections. The University of Panama also implemented a staggered return for its faculties.
By late October, recovery efforts expanded to include the resumption of classes at 327 official educational centers across 10 regions, including Bocas del Toro, Chiriquí, and the Ngäbe-Buglé Comarca. In Veraguas, Meduca has implemented a flexible return to classes using virtual modalities, didactic modules, and home visits to accommodate damaged infrastructure and students who lost supplies. Due to the ongoing crisis, authorities canceled civic parades scheduled for November 3 and 4 in Coclé, Herrera, Los Santos, and Veraguas to redirect resources toward humanitarian assistance.
In terms of housing, the government reported the delivery of the first reconstructed home in the community of Quebrada Grande, Veraguas, to the Sánchez Guerra family. Minister of Housing and Territorial Planning Jaime Jované reported that over 60 homes are under construction across the four hardest-hit provinces, while 75 others undergo demolition or debris removal. Additionally, the Panamanian Red Cross has integrated geospatial technology, such as drones and 360-degree mapping, to coordinate humanitarian assistance.
