Panama Comptroller seizes assets of former minister Rafael Sabonge

The Comptroller General of the Republic of Panama has ordered the seizure of assets and funds belonging to former Minister of Public Works, Rafael Sabonge. The preliminary amount for the seizure is set at $704,452.61.

According to Resolution No. 2766-2026-DNAJ/MP, the precautionary measures include the preventive seizure of bank accounts, real estate, vehicles, and other commercial assets. These actions follow investigations by the National Directorate of Investigations and Forensic Audit and are intended to protect state assets while legal proceedings continue.

Sabonge served as the Minister of Public Works during the administration of Laurentino Cortizo Cohen between 2019 and 2024. He faces legal scrutiny including a criminal complaint for alleged aggravated fraud and administrative negligence related to the management of the fourth bridge project over the Panama Canal.
