Panama coordinates national response to El Niño phenomenon

The Inter-institutional High-Level Commission (CIAN) held its fifth meeting to coordinate Panama’s response to potential adverse effects from the El Niño phenomenon. During the session, various agencies presented progress reports, identified resource requirements, and outlined budgets for mitigation efforts.

The Ministry of Public Works (MOP) proposed interventions for 38 critical points, primarily located in Bocas del Toro, the Ngäbe-Buglé Comarca, Chiriquí, and Colón. Funding for these works has been approved, with operations expected to begin the week of February 10.

Additionally, the National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) presented plans to strengthen operational capacities, focusing on humanitarian assistance, search and rescue, and Emergency Operations Centers. These efforts will prioritize vulnerable populations in Bocas del Toro, Chiriquí, Veraguas, and central provinces.
