El Niño phenomenon regional response
Overview
Panama has initiated institutional coordination to mitigate the adverse effects of the El Niño phenomenon. Through the Inter-institutional High-Level Commission (CIAN), the government has identified resource requirements and approved funding for interventions at 38 critical points, specifically targeting regions such as Bocas del Toro, Chiriquí, and Colón.
To support these efforts, the National Civil Protection System (Sinaproc) has focused on strengthening humanitarian assistance and search and rescue capacities for vulnerable populations. Concurrently, regional responses to El Niño include the deployment of drones by the Peruvian Air Force to monitor high-risk areas through a strategy of prevention, emergency supervision, and damage assessment.
