Panama hosts regional workshop on sustainable aquaculture

Panama is hosting a regional consultation workshop from August 25 to 26 focused on the implementation of the Regional Plan for the Integration of Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy (PINPESCA) 2026-2035. Coordinated by the Organization of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Sector of the Central American Isthmus (OSPESCA) and supported by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the event aims to establish guidelines for sustainable aquaculture in Central America and the Caribbean.

Eduardo Carrasquilla, General Administrator of the Panama Aquatic Resources Authority (ARAP), noted that aquaculture is increasingly vital for food security, job creation, and the economic diversification of rural and coastal communities. He also mentioned that a regulatory decree regarding aquaculture has been completed and is awaiting executive approval. The workshop serves as a collaborative space for dialogue to ensure aquaculture development is supported by solid governance, ecosystem protection, and responsible resource management.
