Panama food security and aquaculture development

Panama is advancing regional and national initiatives focused on food security, sustainable aquaculture, and rural development through cooperation with international organizations.

In late August 2026, Panama hosted a regional workshop to implement the Regional Plan for the Integration of Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy (PINPESCA) 2026-2035. Coordinated by OSPESCA and supported by the FAO, the workshop aimed to establish sustainable aquaculture guidelines for Central America and the Caribbean. Officials noted that aquaculture is vital for economic diversification and food security, mentioning that a regulatory decree for the sector is awaiting executive approval.

Following these regional efforts, Panama and the FAO signed a Country Programming Framework for 2026-2030. This five-year roadmap focuses on agricultural innovation, digitalization, climate change adaptation, and the sustainability of fisheries. The agreement seeks to build on previous technical cooperation to promote a resilient bioeconomy and support inclusive rural development for women, youth, and indigenous communities.
