Panama investigates mysterious red stain at Vista Mar and San Carlos beaches

The Ministry of Environment (MiAmbiente) has launched an investigation into a mysterious reddish stain discovered along the shores of Vista Mar and San Carlos beaches in the Panama Oeste province. The investigation was initiated following a citizen report regarding the presence of the reddish material.

Technical teams from the Coastal and Marine Section are working in coordination with the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) and the Panama Aquatic Resources Authority (ARAP) to assess the area. Officials have collected water and material samples to undergo laboratory analysis to determine the substance's composition, origin, and associated environmental conditions.

While the exact nature of the material remains unknown, authorities noted that similar discolorations in the past have been caused by accumulated algae fragments or massive microalgae blooms, often referred to as red tides. Monitoring of the inspected areas will continue as laboratory results become available.
