Panama investigation targets political figures in Meduca fraud case
Panamanian judicial authorities are investigating a national network involved in the sale of fraudulent academic diplomas and illegal appointments within the Ministry of Education (Meduca). The investigation, led by the Prosecutor's Office Against Organized Crime and the Judicial Investigation Directorate (DIJ), has uncovered that the criminal structure operated across all ten educational regions of the country, including Chiriquí, Bocas del Toro, Veraguas, and Panama Centro.
Judicial sources indicate that several elected political figures may face arrest for their alleged involvement in receiving payments for facilitating these fraudulent appointments. The DIJ is currently conducting electronic searches and tracking bank movements to trace the illicit funds generated by the scheme. The network reportedly included administrative personnel from the Human Resources Department who manipulated digital platforms to enter false information into the teacher competition system.
The Association of Veraguas Educators (AEVE) has criticized the Ministry of Education, stating that these irregularities deprive qualified professionals of legitimate job opportunities and compromise the quality of education for students. AEVE Secretary General Luis Arturo Sánchez Hernández emphasized that students deserve accredited professionals rather than individuals using questionable documentation to secure teaching positions.
