Panama launches 1,320‑ha reforestation plan and national birdwatching drive for 2026

Panama's Ministry of Environment announced a 2026 reforestation campaign targeting 1,320 hectares of degraded land. The effort will use native species such as Cocobolo, Guayacán, Fruta Pan, and Espavé to restore forest cover, protect watersheds, improve carbon capture and enhance biodiversity. Planting will be coordinated with public institutions, local communities and environmental groups.

In parallel, Panama is participating in Global Big Day 2026, a worldwide birdwatching event, by mobilising a massive national effort to record bird species. The goal is to rank the country among those with the highest number of species recorded per unit area and population, showcasing its rich avian diversity.

Both initiatives reflect Panama's broader strategy to curb deforestation, promote ecological restoration and raise public awareness of its natural heritage.
