Panama earthquake triggers international aid and state of emergency

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Panama on October 9, causing widespread damage to infrastructure, including schools, government buildings, and roads. The seismic event, attributed to the Azuero-Soná fault system, has been followed by hundreds of aftershocks, including a 6.6 magnitude tremor. The disaster has affected over 11,000 people, with 27 reported injuries and one confirmed fatality.

International and domestic relief efforts are underway. Venezuela has deployed 51 specialists to assist with technical evaluations of critical infrastructure, such as schools and highways. The United States has provided 17 heavy-duty cargo trucks valued at $2.1 million to bolster Panama's logistics and disaster response capabilities.

Panamanian security forces, including 11,143 personnel from the National Police and Aeronaval Service, are managing evacuations and humanitarian aid distribution. The government has declared a state of emergency to facilitate resource mobilization, including the distribution of food, water, and medical supplies to affected provinces such as Herrera, Los Santos, and Coclé.
