Panama adjusts patriotic celebrations following earthquake
Following a 7.5 magnitude earthquake on October 9, various municipalities and civic organizations in Panama have modified or canceled scheduled patriotic festivities for November. The decisions aim to prioritize humanitarian aid for affected families and ensure public safety during the national state of emergency.
In the province of Los Santos and surrounding areas, several groups, including the Association of Santeños Residents in San Miguelito, have canceled traditional parades for November 10. Instead, they are organizing a solidarity caravan to transport food, water, hygiene products, and medical supplies to earthquake-stricken communities.
Local authorities in San Carlos and La Chorrera have also suspended festivities and public music to redirect municipal resources toward disaster relief. While the Cabinet Council has authorized national parades for November 3 and 4 provided security conditions are met, some local leaders, such as the President of the Panama Municipal Council, have proposed canceling specific events like the October 31 light displays out of respect for the victims.
