Panama orders detention in academic diploma forgery investigation

A Panamanian judge has ordered provisional detention for 10 individuals and house arrest for 13 others as part of an investigation into the widespread use of forged academic diplomas and records. The case, known as ‘Operation Credentials I’, involves teachers and officials accused of using fraudulent credentials to secure or advance positions within the Ministry of Education (Meduca).

The suspects face multiple charges, including document forgery, corruption of public servants, money laundering, organized crime, and the illegal practice of a profession. Investigations revealed a scheme involving the rapid manufacture and sale of fake degrees and credits, often using the names of prestigious universities. Some reports indicate that individuals paid up to $4,000 to obtain these fraudulent documents.

The investigation was triggered by irregularities detected in the Ministry of Education’s human resources system (SIARHE) during teacher appointment competitions. The former Minister of Education, Lucy Molinar, had previously reported these irregularities before her resignation in August. The Superior Court of Appeals is scheduled to review the precautionary measures on September 21.
