Panama provides aid and relocation after Calidonia fire
Panamanian authorities are providing humanitarian assistance and relocation services to families affected by a devastating fire in the Calidonia district of Panama City. The fire impacted the “La Casita Azul” building on Calle Q, affecting approximately 38 rooms and an estimated 114 residents. Preliminary reports suggest up to 91 families may have been impacted, a figure currently undergoing verification.
In response, the National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC) is coordinating field operations, while the Ministry of Social Development (MIDES) has distributed hygiene kits. To address immediate housing needs, the Ministry of Housing and Territorial Planning (Miviot) has initiated a temporary relocation plan, moving the first group of families into local hotels. This strategy aims to keep residents near urban centers to minimize disruptions to employment and education while permanent housing alternatives are evaluated.
Government officials, including First Lady Maricel Cohen de Mulino, have conducted site visits to supervise medical care and inter-institutional coordination involving the Ministry of Government and the Ministry of Health.
