Panama reports rise in sexual abuse and domestic violence
Panama has seen a significant rise in reports of sexual abuse, domestic violence, and maltreatment involving vulnerable populations during the first eight months of 2026. According to data from the Public Ministry, sexual abuse complaints rose by 13% compared to the same period in 2025, totaling 4,599 cases. Attorney General Luis Carlos Gómez noted that 78% of these sexual abuse reports involve minors, with the 15 to 17 age group accounting for 42% of those cases.
Gómez suggested the increase in reports might reflect a greater willingness by victims and families to communicate incidents and a growing trust in institutional mechanisms.
Parallel increases were recorded in other forms of violence. Domestic violence complaints rose by 19.6%, totaling 12,281 cases, which constitutes approximately 73% of all reports regarding family legal order and civil status. Child maltreatment reports increased by 19%, reaching 3,019 cases, while reports of elder abuse saw a 38% increase, totaling 860 cases.
