Panama strengthens border security following deadly attacks

Panama has increased security measures along its border with Colombia following two violent attacks that resulted in the death of a police officer and several injuries. The incidents occurred on Saturday, coinciding with the first day of President Amelardo de la Espriella's term of office.

In response, the Panamanian Ministry of Security has deployed additional personnel from the National Border Service (SENAFRONT) and the National Aeronaval Service (SENAN) to enhance monitoring and control of the territory. Larry Solís, Director General of SENAFRONT, stated that the goal is to "close all coasts" and "our borders" to directly combat criminal organizations.

There are concerns regarding the potential infiltration of criminal groups, such as the Clan del Golfo cartel, or rebels from the National Liberation Army (ELN) through the dense Darien Gap jungle. While Public Security Minister Frank Ábrego previously downplayed the likelihood of such incursions based on shared intelligence between the two nations, the recent violence has prompted immediate action.
