Panama border security escalation

Panama has intensified security measures along its border with Colombia following violent attacks that killed a police officer and injured several others. These incidents occurred during the first day of President Amelardo de la Espriella’s term.

In response, the Ministry of Security deployed additional personnel from the National Border Service (SENAFRONT) and the National Aeronaval Service (SENAN). SENAFRONT Director General Larry Solís stated the objective is to “close all coasts” and “our borders” to combat criminal organizations. Authorities remain concerned about the infiltration of groups like the Clan del Golfo cartel or the National Liberation Army (ELN) through the Darien Gap.

To bolster these efforts, President José Raúl Mulino provided over $785,000 in new equipment to SENAFRONT, including drones, motorcycles, pickup vehicles, and tactical gear to improve surveillance and mobility. Mulino emphasized that securing remote areas of the Darién is central to preventing illegal groups from using Panamanian territory for criminal activities.

While the focus remains on border reinforcement, SENAFRONT Director General Larry Solís Velásquez reported a decrease in homicides within the Third Panama East Brigade’s jurisdiction, noting a drop from 14 cases in 2025 to one in 2026, alongside an increase in arrests and security operations.
