Panamanian groups demand end to US blockade against Cuba

Organizations in Panama are calling for an end to the United States blockade against Cuba. In a letter addressed to Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier Martínez-Acha, solidarity groups requested that Panama vote in favor of a resolution to be presented before the United Nations General Assembly on October 27 and 28.

The groups argue that the blockade has hindered Cuba's development for over six decades, impacting families, trade, and access to essential resources. They noted that coercive measures have intensified since January, including executive orders and provisions aimed at penalizing third countries that supply oil to the island. Furthermore, financial restrictions and Cuba's inclusion on the US list of state sponsors of terrorism are cited as obstacles to acquiring food and medical supplies.

In Cuba, officials reported that the blockade caused losses of over $8 billion in the last year, excluding energy sector damages, and resulted in $98 million in losses for the education sector. The Panamanian groups emphasized that these measures also affect international companies and third countries, including Panama, due to commercial ties through the Colón Free Trade Zone.
