Global solidarity protests against US blockade of Cuba
Overview
Activists in Europe have organized various demonstrations to denounce the United States economic blockade against Cuba.
In Basel, Switzerland, the SwissCuba Association held a protest at the Mittlere Brücke to highlight the impact of American policies, which they characterized as “American terrorism”. This event included a documentary screening to commemorate the centenary of Fidel Castro.
In Berlin, Germany, more than 50 organizations, including the Red Cuba coordination center, held a vigil at the U.S. Embassy. These protests specifically targeted the “total energy blockade,” with organizers noting that fuel and electricity shortages have severely disrupted healthcare, emergency services, and education in Cuba.
Solidarity movements have since expanded globally. In Bilbao, Spain, thousands marched to protest the blockade, coinciding with a concert by singer Silvio Rodríguez. This demonstration promoted a campaign to fund solar energy installations for Cuban hospitals. In France, speakers from the Communist Party of Cuba addressed rallies at the L’Humanité festival, emphasizing the difficulties of maintaining daily life and the necessity of international solidarity.
In Argentina, the Argentine Movement of Solidarity with Cuba has also engaged in musical events and fundraising efforts to provide solar panels for patients in Cuba who depend on electricity.
