Panasonic to mass-produce perovskite solar glass by 2029
Panasonic Holdings has announced it will begin full-scale mass production of its glass-type perovskite solar cells, branded as ‘ENEFACE’, in April 2029. This timeline marks a one-year acceleration from the original 2030 target. Production will take place at a dedicated facility currently under construction in Nagahama, Shiga Prefecture.
Unlike traditional silicon solar panels that require large roof areas, these next-generation cells are thin, lightweight, and flexible. They are designed to be integrated into building materials, allowing windows, walls, balconies, and even car hoods to generate electricity. This technology aims to utilize urban surfaces that were previously unsuitable for solar installation.
Panasonic utilizes inkjet coating and laser processing to apply the発電 layer to large glass substrates, allowing for adjustable transparency and aesthetic designs. The company has already begun preliminary production of limited quantities at its Moriguchi facility in Osaka to refine installation and operational expertise. The company aims for an initial power generation efficiency of approximately 20%, with long-term goals of reaching 30% through tandem cell technology.
