Panathenaic Stadium in Athens begins major upgrade funded by Capital Maritime
The Greek Olympic Committee has launched a major renovation programme at the historic Panathenaic Stadium in Athens. The first phase involves the complete replacement of the track’s tartan surface with a German‑made track coloured in the Greek flag, certified by World Athletics for Diamond League competitions.
The work is fully financed by Capital Maritime & Trading Corp., owned by shipping magnate Vangelis Marinakis. International bodies including the International Olympic Committee, the European Olympic Committees and the Mediterranean Games Committee have reported on the project, and specialised outlets such as Inside the Games have highlighted the refurbishment, which also covers new lighting and marble cleaning.
The upgrades aim to preserve the stadium’s cultural heritage while upgrading its facilities to host top‑level athletics events.
