The Panathenaic Stadium in Athens, a historic U-shaped venue made entirely of white marble, is undergoing its first systematic cleaning and maintenance in over 120 years. Rebuilt for the 1896 modern Olympic Games, the site is known as ‘Kallimarmaro’ (beautiful marble) and serves as the ceremonial send-off point for the Olympic flame.

The restoration project is an initiative of the Hellenic Olympic Committee, supported financially by Capital Maritime & Trading Corp. Conservators are using delicate methods, including low-pressure water spray lances and steam, to remove dirt, organic material, chewing gum, and stains without damaging the historic stone. The goal is to reveal the monument’s original appearance rather than making it perfectly white.

Work is expected to be completed in phases, with certain sections ready by September to prepare for the ‘Dakar 2026’ Olympic flame ceremony, while broader maintenance is slated to continue through 2026. The project also includes upgrading the athletic track to host Diamond League events and installing new LED lighting.
