Panathenaic Stadium marble restoration project
Overview
The Panathenaic Stadium in Athens has commenced a major restoration project involving the first systematic cleaning of its Pentelic marble surfaces in approximately 120 years. Funded by Vangelis Marinakis through Capital Maritime & Trading Corp, the initiative is being conducted under the scientific supervision of architect Manolis Korres and Ministry of Culture conservators.
The cleaning process utilizes specialized, gentle methods to remove accumulated dirt, organic matter, and stains caused by weather and visitors. Techniques include the use of thin spray lances with low-pressure water and steam to address stubborn impurities, such as chewing gum. Senior conservator Dimitris Selemis stated that the objective is not to achieve perfect whiteness, but to remove layers of grime to better understand the monument.
This restoration is part of a broader effort to upgrade the stadium's facilities, including the installation of new LED lighting and an athletic track to host Diamond League events. Work is expected to be completed in phases, with certain sections targeted for completion by September to prepare for the ‘Dakar 2026’ Olympic flame ceremony. Broader maintenance is slated to continue through 2026, supporting the venue's role in Olympic traditions, including the upcoming ceremonies for the Youth Olympic Games and the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
