Indonesia faces multiple fires, including fatal Paniai market blaze and Bogor landfill fire

A devastating fire in the Bapouda market area of Paniai Timur District, Central Papua, has resulted in the deaths of 11 people. The victims include five adults and six children. The blaze, which began around 00:25 WIT on Monday, September 7, 2026, rapidly spread through closely packed kiosks, destroying approximately 40 buildings. The Central Papua Regional Police have deployed five officers to lead the investigation into the cause of the fire, which remains undetermined as forensic teams and witnesses are being consulted.

In a separate incident, multiple fires have impacted Bogor Regency, West Java. A major fire broke out at the Galuga landfill (TPAS Galuga) in Cibungbulang, which began on the afternoon of September 7 and continued into September 8. Local authorities, including Bogor Regent Rudy Susmanto, have deployed joint teams including the military and police to combat the flames, with plans for aerial water bombing. Due to the fire, waste disposal services at the facility were temporarily suspended to allow access for emergency vehicles and water distribution. At least 12 different fire locations were reported across Bogor Regency on September 8, exacerbated by a prolonged dry season and extreme weather conditions.
