Landfill and regional fires in Indonesia

Overview

Indonesia continues to face significant environmental crises driven by landfill fires and widespread land blazes. In Central Papua, a devastating fire in the Bapouda market area of Paniai Timur District killed 11 people, including five adults and six children. The blaze destroyed approximately 40 kiosks, and local police have launched an investigation into the undetermined cause.

In West Java, a major fire at the Galuga landfill in Bogor Regency impacted roughly 42 hectares. While waste disposal services were temporarily suspended to facilitate emergency response, authorities have since coordinated to reopen the site for operations. This incident was part of a broader surge in Bogor, where at least 12 different fire locations were reported on September 8.

Regional land fires have also re-emerged in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, specifically near Bukit Pengol and Teletubbies Hill, where strong winds have complicated containment efforts. In Kalimantan, forest fires have pushed air pollution levels to dangerous extremes, with the Kotawaringin Timur Regency reporting an Air Pollution Index exceeding 1,000.

Addressing the systemic nature of these events, the environmental organization WALHI reported that at least 15 landfills across the country have experienced fires in 2026. WALHI has urged an end to the ‘open dumping’ method, noting that approximately 60.7 percent of Indonesia’s 312 landfills still utilize this practice, which contributes significantly to methane emissions.
