Guillermo del Toro unveils AI‑free 3D restoration of Pan's Labyrinth for 20th anniversary
At the San Diego Comic‑Con, Mexican director Guillermo del Toro marked the 20th anniversary of his 2006 fantasy‑drama *Pan's Labyrinth* with the announcement of a theatrical re‑release. The film will return worldwide in 4K 3D on 9 October 2026, featuring upgraded music, Dolby Atmos sound and a refreshed colour palette.
Del Toro personally oversaw the conversion, insisting it was done entirely by hand and without any artificial‑intelligence tools, stating “absolutely no damned AI.” He framed the effort as protecting the beauty and lineage of artistic craftsmanship. The panel, which awarded him the Inkpot Award, also featured original cast members Ivana Baquero (Ofelia), Doug Jones (the Faun and Pale Man) and cinematographer Guillermo Navarro.
The restored version seeks to give the film a second life for new audiences while reaffirming del Toro’s long‑standing critique of AI in cinema.
