President Sergio Mattarella visits Pantelleria for 10th anniversary of national park
President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella visited Pantelleria to mark the ten‑year anniversary of the island’s National Park, the first such park in Sicily. The ceremony, held in the airport hangar and later in Piazza Cavour, was attended by Environment and Energy Security Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, park president Italo Cucci, the mayor and representatives of the armed forces. About sixty local children took part as “small rangers” to greet the president.
The Pantelleria National Park was created by a decree signed by Mattarella in 2016 and covers roughly 80 % of the island. It protects a rich biodiversity of around 640 plant species, including 13 endemics, and about 260 bird species. UNESCO has inscribed the island’s dry‑stone walls and the traditional vine‑training method on its Intangible Cultural Heritage list, underscoring the cultural and environmental value of the protected area.
