Overview

In late July 2026 Italy marked milestones for two protected areas. On 22 July the Tuscan Archipelago National Park celebrated its 30th anniversary, highlighting its IUCN Green List status and plans for sustainable tourism, cultural education and climate‑change monitoring across the islands of Elba, Giglio, Capraia, Montecristo, Pianosa, Giannutri and Gorgona.

Five days later, on 27 July, President Sergio Mattarella visited Pantelleria for the decennial celebration of Pantelleria National Park, the first national park in Sicily. The ceremony, held in the airport hangar and later in Piazza Cavour, featured Environment and Energy Security Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin, park president Italo Cucci, the mayor and armed‑forces representatives, with about sixty local children acting as “small rangers.” The park, created by a decree signed by Mattarella in 2016, covers roughly 80 % of the island and protects around 640 plant species (including 13 endemics) and about 260 bird species. UNESCO has listed the island’s dry‑stone walls and traditional vine‑training method as Intangible Cultural Heritage, underscoring the area’s combined natural and cultural value.
