Pape Thiaw reportedly nears deal to coach Ghana's Black Stars

Pape Thiaw Black Stars Ghana Football Association Senegal national team AFCON

Former Senegal national team coach Pape Thiaw is reportedly a leading candidate to manage Ghana’s Black Stars. Reports from Gambian outlet GamFoot suggest Thiaw is nearing a deal with Ghanaian football authorities, though the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Sports Ministry have not officially confirmed any negotiations.

This development follows the departure of Carlos Queiroz, who and the GFA mutually ended their collaboration on October 1, 2026, after a difficult start to the 2027 AFCON qualifiers. To find a successor, the GFA and the Sports Ministry have formed a five-member committee tasked with making a recommendation by October 9.

Thiaw has been without a position since July 2026, following Senegal’s exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He was previously succeeded at the Senegal helm by Patrick Vieira. Thiaw’s tenure with Senegal included reaching the 2025 AFCON final, a match that was later ruled a forfeit by the CAF Appeal Board in favor of Morocco.
