Pará Expands Environmental Programs as AmazonFace CO₂ Enrichment Study Launches in Amazon

The state of Pará announced an expanded suite of environmental policies on World Environment Day, highlighting the permanent Amazonas Agora Plan (PEAA) and related instruments such as the Bioeconomy Plan, Native Vegetation Recovery Plan, and payment for ecosystem services. The initiatives aim to cut deforestation, regularize rural land, support sustainable bio‑economic chains, and boost fire‑prevention capacity, backed by a new financing agreement with the Amazon Fund.

At the same time, the AmazonFace research project began installing free‑air CO₂ enrichment (FACE) rings around six mature forest plots near Manaus. The experiment will raise daytime CO₂ concentrations from the current 420 ppm to about 620 ppm for the next decade, making it the first tropical FACE study worldwide. Coordinated by researchers from Brazil and abroad, the study seeks to understand how a 50 % increase in atmospheric CO₂ might affect forest growth, biomass, water use and species interactions.

Both actions reflect Brazil’s broader effort to combine conservation with climate mitigation, linking state‑level governance with international scientific collaboration.
