Brazil records dengue deaths in Paraíba while chikungunya cases drop in Dourados

The health secretariat of Sorriso (Mato Grosso) released an updated arbovirus bulletin on 30 June reporting 45 dengue cases, 19 chikungunya cases and one discarded Zika suspicion from January to June. Officials stressed that case numbers remain low and urged residents to eliminate Aedes aegypti breeding sites, especially during the rainy season. Claudete Damasceno said, “Estamos no período chuvoso, é necessário eliminar criadouros nesse momento e manter esse olhar de forma contínua.”

In Dourados (Mato Grosso do Sul), the Center for Public Health Emergency Operations reported a 92 % reduction in chikungunya notifications, falling from a peak of 1,208 cases to 92, and hospitalizations dropped from more than 60 occupied beds to 11. The municipality has recorded 9,954 notifications in total, with 4,822 confirmed cases.

In São Bento, Paraíba, two 7‑year‑old children died under investigation for severe dengue. The state health department confirmed 279 probable dengue cases in the municipality between January and June, of which 161 were confirmed. Paraíba as a whole is investigating seven dengue deaths amid roughly 3,900 probable cases.

The Paraíba State Health Secretariat also issued a rainy‑season alert, urging early recognition of dengue symptoms and immediate care at basic health units. It highlighted key signs such as sudden high fever, severe joint pain, and warning signs like abdominal pain or bleeding, and warned against self‑medicating with aspirin or anti‑inflammatories.
