Paraíba reports 5.2% increase in rabies-related medical consultations
The State Health Secretariat of Paraíba (SES-PB) reported a 5.2% increase in medical consultations related to potential rabies exposure between January and October 2026. During this period, 16,417 notifications were recorded, compared to 15,604 during the same timeframe in 2025.
The highest number of notifications is concentrated in the 1st, 6th, and 16th Health Regions. Among those treated this year, 8,535 were men and 7,880 were women. Because rabies is a viral disease with a mortality rate near 100%, health authorities have issued guidance for those exposed via bites, scratches, or licks from infected animals.
Health officials recommend immediately washing wounds with soap and water and seeking medical evaluation to determine the need for vaccines or anti-rabies serum. While dogs and cats are common vectors, transmission can also involve wildlife such as bats and primates, as well as livestock. For domestic pets, a 10-day observation period is advised to monitor their health.
