Paraíba State Fishery Program Distributes 1.5 Million Tilapia Fry to Rural Reservoirs in August

The Programa de Expansão e Desenvolvimento da Aqüicultura em Águas Interiores, run by the Secretaria de Estado do Desenvolvimento da Agropecuária e da Pesca (Sedap‑PB), will deliver almost 1.5 million tilapia fry in August to restock reservoirs in roughly 30 municipalities of Paraíba, Brazil.

The distribution is staged alongside regional expos: 530,000 fry will be handed out at the 2nd Expo Alagoinha on 1 August for 11 municipalities; 510,000 fry at the Expo Brejo in Brejo do Cruz for nine municipalities; 300,000 fry at Expo Mari and the 8th Expo Agro Tacima on 21‑22 August for several towns; and a final 100,000 fry at the Expo Prata 2026 in the Cariri region on 27 August.

The programme, overseen by Sedap‑PB secretary Júnior Nóbrega, is intended to improve nutritional intake and provide an extra source of income for rural families. Production facilities include the main Itaporanga Fishery Station and hatcheries in Patos, Riachão de Araruna, plus a partnership with the Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia da Paraíba (IFPB) in Sousa.
