Paraíba aquaculture and water security programs
Overview
The state of Paraíba, Brazil, is executing agricultural and water security initiatives aimed at supporting rural populations. Through the Aquaculture Expansion and Development Program in Inland Waters, managed by the State Secretariat for Agricultural Development and Fisheries (Sedap-PB), the government is distributing approximately 1.5 million tilapia fry to restock reservoirs across various municipalities.
The distribution of fingerlings is being conducted in stages, with recent deliveries scheduled for Ingá, Lagoa de Dentro, Mari, and Tacima. Production is supported by the Itaporanga Fishery Station, hatcheries in Patos and Riachão de Araruna, and a partnership with the Federal Institute of Paraíba (IFPB) in Sousa.
In addition to aquaculture, water security efforts are underway. In Salgado de São Félix, a partnership with the National Health Foundation (Funasa) has led to a service order for the construction of 51 cisterns to provide rainwater storage for rural families.
Expanding its regional development scope, the state has also introduced new energy intelligence initiatives through the Secretariat of State for Infrastructure and Water Resources (Seirh). In partnership with the Federation of Industries of the State of Paraíba (Fiepb), the government launched the Paraíba Energy Information System (SIE-PB) and the Paraíba State Energy Balance (BEPB). These projects, alongside a study on low-carbon hydrogen production potential, aim to provide the data necessary to support public policy and investment in the energy sector.
