Parades Commission to initiate mediation in Drumcree dispute

The Parades Commission has agreed to initiate a formal mediation process regarding the long-standing Drumcree dispute, a move described by the Portadown Orange Order as “significant and unprecedented.” The Commission has reportedly accepted a request to appoint an independent mediator to address the contentious issue.

The development follows an application by the Portadown District for a heavily scaled-down, silent parade on September 27. This proposed march, involving approximately 60 men and no bands through the contested Garvaghy Road area, marks the first such bid in over 28 years.

The Portadown Orange Order has confirmed its agreement to participate in talks “without precondition” and has called on Sinn Féin and local residents to engage in the dialogue. The Order expressed a preference for an independent chair with judicial experience, noting that the dispute is fundamentally a matter of human rights law.

A decision from the Parades Commission regarding the scheduled parade is expected around September 23, four days before the proposed event.
